General framework for estimating the ultimate precision limit in noisy quantum-enhanced metrology
The estimation of parameters characterizing dynamical processes is central to science and technology. The estimation error decreases with the number N of resources employed in the experiment (which could quantify, for instance, the number of probes or the probing energy). Typically, it scales as 1/ p N . Quantum strategies may improve the precision, for noiseless processes, by an extra factor 1...
متن کاملGeneral optimality of the Heisenberg limit for quantum metrology.
Quantum metrology promises improved sensitivity in parameter estimation over classical procedures. However, there is a debate over the question of how the sensitivity scales with the resources and the number of queries that are used in estimation procedures. Here, we reconcile the physical definition of the relevant resources used in parameter estimation with the information-theoretical scaling...
متن کاملThe elusive Heisenberg limit in quantum-enhanced metrology
Quantum precision enhancement is of fundamental importance for the development of advanced metrological optical experiments, such as gravitational wave detection and frequency calibration with atomic clocks. Precision in these experiments is strongly limited by the 1/√N shot noise factor with N being the number of probes (photons, atoms) employed in the experiment. Quantum theory provides tools...
متن کاملExponentially enhanced quantum metrology.
We show that when a suitable entanglement-generating unitary operator depending on a parameter is applied on N qubits in parallel, a precision of the order of 2(-N) in estimating the parameter may be achieved. This exponentially improves the precision achievable in classical and in quantum nonentangling strategies.
